Chapters Corner: Ghana

A new Chapter is created. When the conversations began about creating a Chapter, the desire was to create a group that would unify all individuals in the country with interest in conservation while at the same time creating awareness of the need for conservation.

A maiden meeting was held in September 2015, which brought together 41 experts and students from diverse disciplines with an interest in conservation; this meeting led to the creation of the Ghana Chapter. It currently has a growing membership of 35 people including researchers, scientists, graduate and undergraduate students.

At the maiden meeting, six individuals were nominated for interim executive positions with Prof. Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu nominated as the Interim President. The Chapter aims to promote conservation of natural resources by bringing together conservationists from all over the country to help convey the conservation message. The focus of the Chapter is to identify issues of national concern that warrant conservation attention and to create awareness on the need for conservation, especially among the non-academic community. It also seeks to promote SCB through its membership drive.

The proposed program for the year includes a familiarization tour to conservation hotspots in the country, organising outreach and advocacy programs, and lastly holding quarterly meetings to discuss the welfare of the Chapter and share experiences.

Meanwhile, several members are finalizing abstracts submission for the 2016 Africa Section meeting and looking forward to exciting opportunities and collaborations.

Finally, we want to encourage all Ghanaian members of the SCB who are not yet members of the Ghana Chapter to be part of this wonderful family.
