The Society for Conservation Biology - Africa Region (SCB-AR) is excited to announce that the 5th ACCB will take place at the University of Lagos in Lagos, Nigeria, from 31 August - 4 September, 2026. The theme of the conference is: Embracing Indigenous Solutions and Strengthening Policies for Conserving Africa’s Biodiversity in a Changing Climate.
The Africa Congress for Conservation Biology (ACCB) will convene a vibrant conservation academic community, local community leaders, practitioners, policymakers, national protected area authorities, artists, students, and journalists to share research lessons and tools learned over the years that showcase successful conservation practices in Africa. With over 300 delegates in attendance, ACCB 2026 is the single largest gathering of African conservationists.
The 2026 ACCB venue, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria is a 63-year-old Nigerian university known as University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride. It is a campus that is uniquely situated, along the Lagos Lagoon, making it accessible by water. It can also be accessed by road and air.
The University of Lagos is an area surrounded with several secondary and tertiary institutions, and bordered by the Lagos Lagoon, providing you with a very close view of the aquatic splendor of Lagos State.
Nigeria is one of Africa’s biodiversity hotspots, stretching from mangrove-lined coasts and wetlands to rainforest, savanna, and montane ecosystems that support thousands of plant and animal species, including endemic and threatened species like Cross River gorillas, Nigeria–Cameroon chimpanzees, and many rare birds and amphibians.
At the same time, this rich natural heritage faces intense pressure from habitat loss, overexploitation, pollution, climate change, invasive species, and illegal wildlife trade, underscoring the urgency of conservation action and regional collaboration that ACCB 2026 aims to strengthen.
