Two Exciting Field Trips Exclusively for LACA 2024 Participants!
We invite you to be part of two incredible opportunities to immerse yourself in nature, where you can learn from experts, explore unique ecosystems, and contribute to conservation initiatives in Ecuador. Both field trips, organized by USFQ, are designed to provide educational and practical experiences in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management in the Amazon and Cloud Forest—global biodiversity hotspots. Don’t miss out!
1. Training at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station
Description: Experience an unforgettable journey to the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, exclusive to LACA 2024 participants. Over four days, you will engage in ongoing research projects focused on conserving Yasuní’s rich biodiversity. Activities include guided rainforest walks to observe unique flora and fauna species, hands-on sessions on camera trap management, and workshops on wildlife ecology and conservation. You will also attend talks on monitoring techniques and conservation project management.
Learn the technical and logistical aspects of conducting field research in remote areas and participate in discussions on the challenges of Amazon conservation. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate for your participation in the workshops and field activities. 2. Cloud Forest Birding Workshop
Description: Join us for an unforgettable workshop in the majestic cloud forest of the Chocó Andino, where you’ll explore the natural richness of one of the planet’s most biodiverse regions. You will discover the extraordinary variety of birds inhabiting the Chocó Andino Biosphere Reserve and learn about key conservation initiatives. This workshop is ideal for those interested in deepening their knowledge of preserving these unique ecosystems.
The workshop will take place at the Tandayapa Cloud Forest Station (TCS), just 2.5 hours from Quito. This area is part of the Tropical Andes hotspot, a threatened region brimming with life. Notable species include the spectacled bear, olinguito, and birds like the Andean cock-of-the-rock, plate-billed mountain toucan, and black-breasted puffleg. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to spot various species of insects, amphibians, and reptiles, all in an environment designed for learning and conservation. Over two days and one night, you’ll attend expert-led talks on bird biodiversity in the Chocó Andino, with guided visits to key birding sites. You will also have the chance to discuss conservation strategies and share experiences on the challenges of preserving these valuable ecosystems. More information at this link.
