Maryland Transit Administration (Local Train Travel)

There are three types of trains that operate in and around the greater Baltimore area to serve and connect a variety of cities and towns. Please go to mtamaryland.com or call 866-RIDE-MTA for more information, schedules, fares and assistance.

1) MARC Train

The MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) Train Service is a commuter rail system that operates three lines of service on weekdays only. Purchase your ticket prior to boarding the train.

PENN LINE: operates primarily between Baltimore’s Penn Station, through BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Train Station, and Union Station in Washington, D.C.  As of July 2012, the one-way fare from BWI Airport to Baltimore’s Penn Station is $4.00.

BRUNSWICK LINE: operates between Brunswick, Maryland and Washington Union Station.

CAMDEN LINE: operates out of Camden Yards in Downtown Baltimore City and travels to Union Station in Washington, D.C.

2) Light Rail

The Light Rail operates at street level, traveling on bridges to cross several bodies of water connecting 32 station stops. Purchase a ticket from the ticket vending machine before boarding the Light Rail. As of July 2012, a one-way ticket is $1.60. Tickets are not available onboard. Press the button on the outside of the train to gain access. To exit, press the green button next to the door. This Train system connects Penn Station with a stop right at the Convention Center.

3) Metro Subway

The 15.5-mile, 14 station Metro Subway system operates from the Owings Mills corporate and shopping complex in Baltimore County, through Downtown Baltimore to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Purchase a ticket from a ticket vending machine prior to boarding. As of July 2012, a one-way ticket is $1.60. Pass through the turnstile and get onboard. Listen for your station stop, or refer to the system map in each car. The closest stop to the Convention Center is approximately 4 blocks north.

Charm City Circulator

The Charm City Circulator (CCC) consists of a fleet of 21 free shuttles that travel three routes in Baltimore City. The shuttle is intended to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas pollution by offering a convenient, reliable and eco-friendly form of public transportation. The CCC consists of three separate routes—the Green Route which runs from City Hall to Fells Point to Johns Hopkins, the Purple Route which runs from Penn Station to Federal Hill, and the Orange Route which runs from Hollins Market to Harbor East. The Charm City Circulator was a part of former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon’s vision of a “cleaner, greener Baltimore.” All residents and visitors are encouraged to use this service—not only is it free, it’s efficient. A shuttle arrives every 15 minutes at the designated stops on each route. Use it as your connector to your regular train, bus or commuter lot—or just to get a taste of all Baltimore City has to offer. Visit charmcitycirculator.com for more information.
