Nigeria Chapter of Society for Conservation Biology (NSCB) and the Nigeria Tropical Biology Association (NTBA) are pleased to announce a joint Biodiversity Conservation Conference set to take place 20-24 June, 2016 at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria.
The theme of the conference is Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals: Toward Sustainable Biodiversity Conservation in Nigeria.
More than 150 world leaders gathered at the United Nations in New York on 25 September, 2015 to adopt a new and ambitious development blueprint known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda comprises 17 new “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, or “Global Goals”, and 169 targets which will guide policy and funding for the next 15 years, beginning with a historic pledge to end poverty. Everywhere. Permanently. The SDGs was used to replace the “Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).” The SDGs is therefore aimed at complimenting the job that the MDGs started. The objective of SDGs was to produce a set of universally applicable goals that balances the three dimensions of sustainable development: environmental, social, and economic.
The Biodiversity Conservation Conference is to be jointly organised by the Nigeria Chapter of Society for Conservation Biology (NSCB) and Nigeria Tropical Association (NTBA) alumni group. The conference is to understand the crucial roles that biodiversity play in sustainable development. With the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in motion, the conference will engage students, researchers, academia and conservation practitioners on discussing emerging issues and strategy to improving conservation of biological diversity in Nigeria.
