Subject: Wildlife Capture & Chemical Immobilization (Online)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is for students and professionals interested in learning about all aspects of capturing and immobilizing wild animals using a variety of techniques and drugs. This course is also the prerequisite for a 4-day FIELD COURSE designed to provide students a one-of-a-kind, hands-on learning experience capturing and chemically immobilizing elk, black bears, wolves, mountain lions, and several species of mesocarnivores at the Wildlife Science Center (WSC) in Stacy, MN. September field course will be offered at WSC Sept 12-15 and the 26-29.

PREREQUISITES: None. Students that took an approved course (e.g., Safe Capture) 1-3 years ago are eligible to take a CWS refresher anytime.

TEXT: Kreeger, T.J., and J. M. Arnemo. 2018. Handbook of Wildlife Chemical Immobilization. Fifth edition. Published by authors. 472 pp. A hard copy or ebook is included, but international shipping of the textbook is not. International students can pay for shipping the textbook or receive an ebook at no cost.

FORMAT: Participants will learn at their own pace over four weeks by watching prerecorded lectures, working on problem sets, and reading Dr. Kreeger’s handbook and peer-reviewed journal articles. Once a week, participants will have the option to participate in a live Q&A with Dr. Kreeger about the materials presented in each module. An exam will be administered to those seeking a certification of completion from the Center for Wildlife Studies.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT: This course is approved by The Wildlife Society and the Ecological Society of America for CEU’s (included for FREE).
