Michael Soulé was the cofounder and first president of SCB. He is known as the "father of conservation biology" and inspired many who knew him and looked to his works. We have compiled some of these memories here.
To: Micheal Soule From: The Animals and I. Rest in Peace! You inspired multitudes, fathered Conservation Biology, & co-founded @Society4ConBio & @wildlandsnetwrk. Every time we talked I left leading with my heart & more courage to bring science to politics. We'll miss you so! pic.twitter.com/85kxD60h4s

This hits hard. For 11 years I worked for @Society4ConBio, and I think of Michael as our #conservation #Inukshuk (if a slim one), a guiding legend of a person who will forever be there with us on the trail. https://t.co/AaeqOObMv6

Sad to hear this news. I met M. Soulé at the 1989 AIBS conference in Toronto and had a marvelous conversation about conservation biology. He encouraged and wished me well in a career in conservation. And, he sold me a @Society4ConBio membership. A memorable encounter. https://t.co/ZMJwCuKXC0

He established the field of conservation biology, determined how to deliver it and identified its agenda. A hero that the planet owes much to. Am also impressed that he stayed radical and determined we could achieve more. Delivering change would be the best tribute to his memory. https://t.co/IegGy7BqWZ

I’m saddened to hear this news. I was fortunate to spend some time with Michael in recent decades. He really influenced the way I and so many other conservationists approach their work. He had a deep passion for nature and will have lasting impact in science and conservation. https://t.co/JTubBXzEjh

He genuinely cared about conversation. I remember when he gave a seminar at UGA and had himself and the audience in tears about the biodiversity crisis. Thank you, Dr. Soulé! We carry the torch. https://t.co/GvPlOhA29f

A great loss for humanity, science and biodiversity conservation! I had the privilege to be his host in Sweden for two days, and I stayed with him for a few days in Santa Cruz in 1991. So generous and hospitable! So broad and deep knowledge! His spirit and sci. legacy remain!
